Preparation: I have had to give classes and speeches before. I can tell you from good and bad experience that preparation builds confidence. But you already know that. Sometimes, I need someone to remind me of the fundamentals of a well delivered message. I call that someone a friend. I can be THAT friend if you are that ugly.
Passion: Being passionate is mandatory whether you are interested in the topic or you absolutely don’t give a rat’s body part about the subject at hand. Why, Rellie? Because of self respect and pride. It is that simple. It doesn’t matter if you are a parent lecturing your kids, a teacher teaching her students, a salesman talking to a customer, a speaker at huge conference, or if you are just trying to talk your way out of a speeding ticket. Being passionate is synonymous to your best effort. And anything less than your best is a big fat sin. Especially, if that sin leads to a $200 dollar citation. If you give an awesome passionate speech on the history of tumbleweeds then the chances of closing an important business deal, getting through to your children, enlightening your students, and getting out of a ticket are higher. How To Focus A Presentation
on Sep 08 in UncategorizedNo matter how much effort you put into preparing a presenation, if you fail to focus on the needs of your audience, your presentation will not achieve anything and the audience will leave your talk dissatisfied. If the audience do nothing differently as a result of listening to you, why bother to put yourself through all the stress of delivering your presentation?
In my 20 years of training people in presentation skills, the most common mistake made by presenters is not thinking through properly what they want their presentation to achieve.
Before you even start to think about writing down what you want to say, you need to consider the following three elements to effectively focus your talk on the needs of your audience.
Objective
All talks have a purpose, there’s a reason for giving it, there’s something to achieve…but unfortunately, not many presenters consider this fully. They tend to be more concerned with what they are going to say, rather than what they want to achieve.
Think through your objective carefully and think in terms of ‘final objectives’. What do I mean by ‘final objectives’? A good example is a marketing talk. If you ask most people what the objective of a marketing seminar is, they will say something like that it is to make people generally aware of their product. If you think about this, no one ever got rich by making people aware of their product. You get rich by selling the product. Your shallow objective may to be to make people aware but your real final objective is to get them to buy your goods. May sound obvious but identifying the right objective changes what you say and how you say it.
Good presentations always have a strong objective. It’s the thing that drives the rest of the process. Use very positive language when thinking about your objective. Don’t say, ‘I’d like to make my audience aware of my product’, say instead, ‘by the time I’ve finished my talk, these people will have no doubt that my product is the best on the market and they won’t be able to resist buying it’.
Audience
How are we going to achieve that objective with this audience?
What do we need to consider here? Potentially lots of things. For example, what is their level of knowledge of our subject? Do they know a lot or a little? How do they feel about the subject? Are they for me or against me? Have they a mind-set that it will be boring? How am I going to cope with that? What’s their seniority? Are they senior staff, junior staff or mixed? How old are they…what are their prejudices…what strategy will hit the right buttons?
The list is endless but if you just ask yourself the question, ‘who are my audience…what do I need to know about them in order to achieve my objective’, then you’ll come up with the list of things you need to know in those circumstances. The important thing is to ask yourself the question. Put yourself in your audience’s shoes. See the world through their eyes.
Quite often, thinking about your objective and audience are things you can do whilst driving the car or standing in the shower, they don’t always take time out of the working day. The thing to do is to think about them because it is only by doing this that you will do a successful talk that achieves something.
Material
Don’t subject your audience to information overload. The gut reaction of thoughtless presenters is to cram their talks with far too much information. They endeavour to protect themselves with too much content. They cram 90 minutes of material into a 15-minute talk. They survive!
Get your material together however you want and then go straight back to your objective and your audience and hack the superfluous stuff out of there! Only include in your talk what you need to achieve your objective. Including unnecessary material will only cloud your objective; it will surround it with a fog and make it difficult for your audience to see it.
If it’s a selling presentation, talk benefits not features. Make it customer focused not product focused. Don’t list the features of your company or product without then making it clear why that feature will be of benefit to the customer. ‘We have 50 offices spread throughout the UK (feature)…which means that we can provide you with a local service (benefit).
In fact, put all of your material through the ‘So What?’ test. Imagine you are a member of your audience and ‘listen’ to your talk. If you could say ‘So What?’ to anything you say, then cut it out or say it differently.
Check your material for abstractions. ‘We have developed a methodology to highlight the risks in your processes and to increase the usability of customer focussed information from a strategic point of view.’ I beg your pardon! Say what you mean…use examples if the words don’t make it crystal clear what you are talking about.
By starting with a strong ‘terminal’ objective, seeing your talk from your audience’s perspective and then only talking about what you want the audience to do and explaining why they should do it, you have constructed the foundations for a successful talk that actually achieves something.

A Quicker Route To Promotion
on Sep 07 in UncategorizedIf you are ambitious and currently putting in long hours, working feverishly at your computer, in the persuit of your next promotion, you have chosen the most difficult route to realising your ambitions. It is easy to assume that if we show commitment to our employer by being the first in (and last to leave) each day, processing more work that our colleagues and generally working hard, that we’ll get noticed and be first in line for promotion.
Recent research however, blows this strategy out of the water! They looked at the factors that influence bosses when making promotion decisions and indentified three that influence their decision the most. In reverse order of importance they are:
Knowledge – 10% Image – 30% Exposure – 60%
Let’s take knowledge first. Why is it only 10%? Imagine that you take two days off work. On your return, you work really hard and not only complete that day’s work, but also catch up on the two days that you have missed. Who is going to come up to you at the end of the day and say “Well done, you’ve completed three days work in one day”. Who is going to notice, or even care. The knowledge you use to do your job is taken for granted. It’s also known that if there are any deficiencies in your knowledge, it’s a relatively easy training job to put right. This is not to say that your knowledge isn’t important, just that it’s taken for granted. You will, of course, soon hear from your boss if you get something wrong! If you are spending all day at your computer processing work, don’t expect to get noticed or be identified as someone worthy of promotion.
Your image is three times more important. The confidence with which you deal with others, your interpersonal skills and your demeanor all influence others in the ‘emotional ranking’ that they subconsciously give you. They rate you as a good, average or weak person based on their perception of you. So, how you rate yourself (your self confidence) is three times more important than what you know.
Twice as important as your image is your exposure to others, particularly your bosses. If they don’t know you, how can they rate your talents? Your ability to network effectively within your company is therefore of vital importance.
Now we get to the depressing bit. Think about where you spend the vast majority of your time at work. For most of us, it’s sitting at our desk, processing work on our computer. An activity that gets us virtually nowhere in terms of realising our ambitions. That’s why on many management courses they tell you not to send an email or telephone a colleague. Instead go and see them. And whilst you are there, talk to the people that work around them. All good advice to maximise your image and exposure, but there is one big problem. How many of us actually have the time to do this. If we are already incredibly busy, where is the motivation to take time out to go and see someone, when sending an email of telephoning them would be much quicker?
There is however, one easy way to hugely boost your image and exposure to others. Presenting to others is generally recognised as the ‘big fear’. Most people would rather do anything than stand up in front of a group of people and deliver a presentation. This provides you with a huge opportunity. That opportunity becomes even bigger when you think about the quality of most business presentations you go to. I have been coaching people in presentation skills for over 20 years, so you can perhaps imagine the number of presentations I have sat through. Sadly, the vast majority are dull, boring, pointless and soporiphic. Someone giving a monotone commentary to fifty PowerPoint slides will never boost their image or exposure. In fact, they usually achieve the opposite!
It is not impossible for anyone to deliver a useful, interesting, engaging and dare I say, entertaining business presentation. Have a clear objective (what do you want the audience to do as a result of listening to you?) and structure what you say (copy the evening news for your structure). Leave out as much factual detail as you can. Just explain what you want your audience to do and motivate them to do it by providing them with the personal and specific benefits they will enjoy from doing what you want them to do. Remember, audiences are not interested in what you do. All they want to know is what you can do for them. Stand up to deliver your talk and do it with energy, enthusiasm and commitment. Use examples to illustrate your key messages, so that the audience can ’see what you mean’ and finally, don’t hold notes. Just have a card at the side of you with a few words reminding you of the points you want to make and the order of delivery. Show the audience that you are enthusiastic, persuasive and confident.
Anyone, with the right training, can achieve this. I’ve seen it over and over again. Volunteer for presentations, or find a reason to convince others that you should give one. Deliver your talk in a way that differentiates you from the normal mediocrity that audiences have to endure and in no time at all, you’ll find that your name is on a shortlist for the next promotion!
