When Vocal Abuse is More than Just a Pain in the Neck
on Sep 21 in Uncategorized
Today many people suffer from vocal abuse and they are not sick. If you are experiencing chronic hoarseness, persistent sore throats or even loss of voice by the end of the day, you should seriously look into what is causing this problem and learn how to correct it. Vocal abuse will not go away on its own.
If you have been to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist and have been given a clean bill of health, then you need to rectify the problem. If you ignore the discomfort or the pain, chances are good that it will only get worse.
Unless there is a medical problem or you are taking certain prescriptive antihistamines, vocal abuse is often caused by misuse or misplacement of the voice. Basically, what is happening is that the vocal folds (cords) and throat are being overused because of excessive shouting or excessive strain on those delicate organs. Even constant talking over a prolonged period of time in a normal volume level can produce these symptoms.
When you learn how to place your voice properly, however, you will notice an immediate improvement in this respect. The throat and voice box cavities are only 2 of 5 resonators that are responsible for the production of voiced sound.
If you learn how to use your chest cavity to power your sound, the largest and most important resonator for voiced sound, you will not only alleviate the hoarseness or soreness but you will also discover a richer, warmer, more resonant speaking voice. The pitch of your voice (highness or lowness of sound – not the volume which is loudness or softness) will probably drop to some degree and you will be able to increase your volume without shouting.
When I worked with Ulf Samuelsson, former NHL hockey player, he was losing his voice every week after coaching his son’s hockey team. When he discovered how to increase his volume without shouting, he remarked that he wished he had known how to project his voice all the years he was playing professionally. Ice rinks are loud environments and to be heard in speaking, you must increase your volume. If you do it poorly, you will notice hoarseness or pain in your throat.
What is important to realize about your speaking voice is that chronic hoarseness or even loss of voice will never go away on its own if you continue with the same vocal practices that have brought about your discomfort or your lack of voice. Only when you change your voice placement will the vocal abuse go away.
How much value do you place on your speaking voice? Don’t ignore vocal abuse because it can lead to permanent damage. Learn to place your voice properly and discover a voice that has lasting power without any pain, any discomfort, or any loss of sound.

Why Vocal Warmups are Unnecessary for the Speaking Voice
on Sep 21 in Uncategorized
It never ceases to amaze me the theory that the speaking voice can benefit from vocal warm-ups. While the theory is absolutely a must for the singing voice, the same cannot and should not be attempted for the speaking voice.
What do most people do all day long either in their jobs, in their social lives, or among their family? They talk. Some talk more than others. Whether we are speaking in a face-to-face situation, talking on the telephone, or addressing a group of people, our days are usually filled with some form of dialogue. And true, some days we may talk more than other days.
What do most singers not do all day long (unless they are rehearsing or practicing)? They do not sing. This is the most obvious reason that singers must warm-up the voice or musicians must warm-up with their instruments or even athletes must warm-up their bodies before the game, the relay or the race. Because the muscles and techniques necessary for the singer, the musician, or the athlete are not being used throughout their day, they then must practice using those muscles in order to make them more pliable and ready for the stress and pressure they will be undergoing.
Since you are using your speaking voice throughout your day, however, the muscles and organs necessary to produce spoken voice are already warmed up. Their continual use is the practice. Therefore, doing extra exercises for the speaking voice is not only worthless but in many cases produces excessive wear and tear on the vocal folds (cords). For many people, excessive use of the speaking voice can actually cause damage to those delicate organs.
One of the marvels of good voice training is that when you find your ‘real’ voice, in which your chest becomes your primary sounding board, there is absolutely no need to do any warm-up exercises. Yes, in my training, I offer breathing exercises to practice while driving to and from work, but the real practice for the speaking voice is <b>practical</b>. Once you discover your ‘real’ voice, the homework I assign is to use it as much as possible throughout your day. That is the exercise. Making your new voice a habit is your goal because once the new sound takes over, you will discover your voice continually improving with age.
When I am preparing to get ready for a presentation, for example, I will practice the opening of my presentation in the shower or while driving to my destination. I am not, however, practicing as a means of warming up my voice, but am practicing as a means of concentrating on what I will be saying.
If you are a singer, by all means, warm-up. If you are speaker, however, don’t get weighed down with useless exercises and drills. Find your ‘real’ voice and it will be ready whenever you call upon it.

What are the three categories of the Prophet Muhammad’s Speeches?
on Sep 19 in UncategorizedIn this article, the following six points will be discussed:
1) The three categories of the Prophet Muhammad’s speeches
2) An example of Hadith Qudsi that gives you an idea about Allah’s Mercy
3) The verse of the Noble Quran that supports this Hadith Qudsi
4) The difference of Allah’s Mercy and man’s mercy
5) Allah has decreed for Himself mercy as a bounty from Him
6) The Story of Abraham and his disbeliever guest when Allah blamed Him
————————————————————————————————
1) The three categories of the Prophet Muhammad’s speeches:
It should be emphasized that the speeches said by the Prophet Muhammad have three categories; they are: 1) The Noble Quran, 2) Hadith Qudsi or Sacred Hadith and 3) Prophetic Hadith.
The Noble Quran is Allah’s word which is revealed unto the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel.
Hadith Qudsi is the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad as revealed to him by Allah. Hadith Qudsi (or Sacred Hadith) is so named because, unlike the majority of Hadith which are Prophetic Hadith, its authority is traced back not to the Prophet Muhammad but to the Almighty Creator.
The Prophetic Hadith is the saying of the Prophet Muhammad that he has said throughout his life and its authority is traced back to him.
————————————————————————————————
2) Herein, an example of Hadith Qudsi that gives an idea about Allah’s Mercy.
In this Hadith Qudsi Allah says:
“O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and put your hope in Me, I have forgiven you for what you have done and I do not mind.
O son of Adam, if your sins were to reach the clouds of the sky and then you would seek My forgiveness, I would forgive you.
O son of Adam, if you were to come to Me with sins that are close to filling the earth and then you would meet Me without ascribing any partners with Me, I would certainly bring to you forgiveness close to filling it.”
In this Hadith Qudsi, Allah gives hope to mankind more than any other narration.
It displays the feature and excellence of Allah’s mercy.
Indeed, Allah is the Most Compassionate, and the Most Merciful.
In this Hadith Qudsi, Allah tells man of the greatness of His forgiveness and mercy so that no one would despair due to the amount of sins he may have committed.
Allah catches the attention of mankind by calling out, O son of Adam!
This is a call to every human being.
Why did not Allah say, O mankind or O People?
The significance of this specific call is because Adam was the first human being, who committed the first sin.
Adam was an example to all humans of the consequences of sin and how to turn to Allah for forgiveness of ones sins.
This gives hope that even after committing a violation, ones sins can be forgiven if one repents to Allah sincerely the same way that the father of mankind sinned, repented, and was forgiven by Allah.
This Hadith teaches us the importance of realizing Allah’s mercy, having faith and hope in Him especially when calling to Allah alone for forgiveness, and the importance of repentance in the life and faith of a believer.
This Hadith Qudsi is supported by the following verse of the Holy Quran.
————————————————————————————————
3) The Noble Quran’s verse that supports this Hadith Qudsi
Verse 39:53 says:
QARIB: say: ‘O my worshipers, who have sinned excessively against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely, Allah forgives all sins. He is the Forgiver, the Most Merciful.
SHAKIR: say: O my servants! Who have acted extravagantly against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely he is the Forgiving the Merciful
PICKTHAL: say: o my slaves who have been prodigal to their own hurt! Despair not of the mercy of Allah, who forgiveth all sins. lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
YUSUFALI: say: “o my servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for he is oft-forgiving, Most merciful.
The meaning of the verse:
Say O Muhammad
O my servants who have been prodigal to their own hurt through disbelief, idolatry, adultery, murder etc.
Do not despair of Allah’s mercy
Do not despair of Allah’s forgiveness,
Allah forgives all sins.
Lo! He is the Forgiving; He forgives those who repent of disbelief and believe in Allah.
Allah is the Most Merciful towards those who die repentant.
It is said that this verse is the most far reaching in conveying the compassion shown by Allah, Exalted is He, to His servants; because, in accordance with His knowledge, He does not deprive them of that which He bestows on others, rather He showers mercy upon them to the point that He admits them to the very quintessence of [His] kindness, by virtue of [His] eternal remembrance of them.
————————————————————————————————
4) The difference of Allah’s Mercy and man’s mercy
Verse 17:100 says:
QARIB: say: ‘if you possessed the treasuries of my lord’s mercy, you would hold them back for fear of spending and mankind is ever grudging!
SHAKIR: say: if you control the treasures of the mercy of my lord, then you would withhold (them) from fear of spending, and man is niggardly
PICKTHAL: say (unto them): if ye possessed the treasures of the mercy of my lord, ye would surely hold them back for fear of spending, for man was ever grudging.
YUSUFALI: say: “if ye had control of the treasures of the mercy of my lord, behold, ye would keep them back, for fear of spending them: for man is (every) niggardly!”
The meaning of the verse:
Say, to them O Muhammad:
‘If you possessed the treasuries of the mercy of my Lord, of provision and rain,
if you possessed the keys to the stores of the provision of my Lord, you would surely withhold them, you would stint, for fear of spending, fearing that they would be depleted if one spent from them and that you would then become impoverished; and man is ever niggardly’.
In other words, you would surely hold them back for fear of spending for fear of becoming poor, for man i.e. the disbelieving man (was ever grudging) parsimonious, stingy and tight-fisted.
————————————————————————————————
5) Allah has decreed for Himself mercy as a bounty from Him
Verse 6:12 says:
QARIB: say: ‘to whom belongs that which is in the heavens and the earth?’ say: ‘to Allah. he has written for himself mercy, and will gather you on the day of resurrection in which there is no doubt. those who have lost their souls, they do not believe. ‘
SHAKIR: say: to whom belongs what is in the heavens and the earth? say: to Allah; he has ordained mercy on himself; most certainly he will gather you on the resurrection day– there is no doubt about it. (as for) those who have lost their souls, they will not believe
PICKTHAL: say: unto whom belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth? say: unto Allah. he hath prescribed for himself mercy, that he may bring you all together to the day of resurrection whereof there is no doubt. those who ruin their souls will not believe.
YUSUFALI: say: “to whom belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth?” say: “to Allah. he hath inscribed for himself (the rule of) mercy. that he will gather you together for the day of judgment, there is no doubt whatever. it is they who have lost their own souls, that will not believe.
The meaning of the verse:
Say O Muhammad:
‘To whom belongs what is in the heavens and in the earth?’
Say: ‘unto Allah belongs the creation of the heavens and the earth, for even if they do not say this, there is no other response.
Allah has prescribed, He has decreed, for Himself mercy, as a bounty from Him; this is a gentle summoning of them to the faith. He will surely gather you together on the Day of Judgment of which there is no doubt, no uncertainty, in order to requite you for your deeds. Those who have forfeited their own souls subject by exposing them to the chastisement — they do not believe.
In other words, for the believers in deferring His punishment, that He may bring human beings all together to the Day of Judgment ; whereof there is no doubt. Those who ruin their own souls, as well as their dwellings, servants and spouses in Paradise will not believe in Muhammad and the Quran.

6) The Story of Abraham and his disbeliever guest
Abraham, the great Prophet and the father of all Prophet was famous of Hospitality and Kindness. He used not to eat unless he has guest or guests sharing with him his food. One day, he has got a 60 years old guest. He was happy and told his family to prepare food for the guest. While waiting for food, Abraham asked the guest for his faith and religion. The guest was disbeliever with no faith.
Abraham was disappointed and said: Sorry my guest, there is no food for you.
The guest left and walked away.
The Angel Gabriel came to Abraham and said:
Allah is giving this man food for 60 years and you refused to give him one meal!
And the Angel Gabriel smiled and disappeared!
Abraham ran bare footed to catch his guest back.
Finally, he found him
Abraham said: come on please, the food is ready for you
The guest said: what happened with you?
Abraham said: My God blamed me because of you
The guest said: your God did that?
Abraham said: O yes!
The guest said: then your God is Great and Merciful
The guest continued: tell me about your God
Abraham said: please come home to eat and I will tell you.
And at home, Abraham told him and the guest said: I believe in your God.
Then Abraham prayed to Allah and the angel Gabriel came back to him.
Abraham said:
‘O You Who is the most generous in pardoning!’
Then the angel Gabriel said to him:
‘O Abraham! Do you know what the generosity of His pardon implies?’
Abraham answered: ‘No, O Gabriel.’
The angel Gabriel said:
‘It is that when He pardons a misdeed, He converts it into a good deed.’

In the Quran: Allah Says: produce your scripture, if you are being truthful
on Sep 16 in UncategorizedThe Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran (20)
This is the 20th article (and the last one) of the series:
“The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran”
The Bible says that the Lord Jesus said no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again of water and the Spirit and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. The Noble Quran says that the Spirit belongs to Allah’s knowledge, about which you know not. Also the Quran replies the disbelievers who claim that the Angels are God’s daughters; and also, the Quran answers the dualists who claim that Satan is Allah’s partner.
It is interesting that the Bible claims that the Lord Jesus said that the wind blows wherever it pleases, you hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from and you cannot tell where it goes.
From the scientific point of view, winds are plotted on surface weather analyses indicating the direction the wind is blowing from as well as its strength, and over much of the globe wind speeds are measured over a ten-minute time frame. Wind direction is reported by the direction from which it originates and where it goes with the use of weather vanes. Everyday, the “Weather Forecasts” on TV, radio, newspaper etc. determine precisely the direction of the wind, where it comes from and where it goes.
Hence, the Bible initiates an important question:
Has the Lord Jesus refuted the climatology and the Wind Advisory? Has the Lord Jesus denied the Weather Forecasts?
As a matter of fact, I do not believe that the Lord Jesus said that; He knows better than the Scientists.
——————————————————————–
The Sons of the Lord God in the Bible (20)
The Bible (John 3:1-8) says:
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
——————————————–
John 3:1-8 (King James Version)
1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
===================================================
The Sons of the Lord God in the Quran (20)
The Noble Quran says that the Spirit is of the command of Allah; it belongs to His knowledge, about which you know not.
Also, the Quran answers back the disbelievers who claim that the angels were God’s daughters by asking them many sensible questions.
In addition, the Quran replies the dualists who claim that Satan is Allah’s partner in that Allah created the good things while Satan created the evil ones.
Then, the Quran says that Allah exonerates Himself from the lies they attribute unto Him. He is exalted, above what they attribute to Him in the way of His having a child or a partner.
Essentially, the Quran decisively forbids saying that Allah has a son.
It is not befitting for the Majesty of Allah to take to Himself a son.
Allah is exalted, magnified; He is above what they associate with Him of son or partner. Allah is far transcendent above all that they ascribe unto Him!
In Islam, this point is very important faith wise.
- Basically, it is unforgivable sin to say or to believe that the One Almighty Creator [who is Allah or God or the Lord or Jehovah or whatever name(s) you are giving Him] has a son or Sons.
From the Islamic point of view, the conclusion of this essential topic that may establish or tear down the faith is that:
Any one who believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or Sons; he corrupts and spoils his faith and he is considered as a disbeliever; and in the afterlife he will dwell in the eternal fire.
Any one who believes that the Almighty Creator has no son or partner, he has a good faith and he is considered as a believer; and in the afterlife, he will dwell in the eternal paradise.
Verses 17:85 and 37:149-159 of the Noble Quran (respectively) make the topic of the Spirit and the son(s) of God plain, clear and understandable.
——————————————–
The meanings of verse 17:85
The background of the verse
It is narrated that some members of the Jewish ruling council went to the Prophet Muhammad and asked him: O Muhammad, what do you say about the Spirit? They asked him this question to know if he is a true or a false prophet. Muhammad kept quiet. Then a revelation was coming to him.
Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse (17:85):
“They are asking thee concerning the Spirit. Say: The Spirit is by command of my Lord, and of knowledge ye have been vouchsafed but little”.
The meaning of the verse 17:85
And they (that is, the Jews) will question you O Muhammad, concerning the Spirit, from which the body receives life. Say, to them: ‘the Spirit is of the marvels of my Lord; the Spirit is of the command of my Lord, that is, it belongs to His knowledge, about which you know not. And of knowledge you have not been given except a little’, relative to His knowledge, exalted be He.
——————————————————
The meanings of verse 37:149
Before Islam, the ignorant disbelievers among Arabs used to hate having female girls and they preferred having sons, also, they used to kill their female because they think that it is shameful to have females and it is an honor to have sons. On the other hand, they claim that the Angels are God’s daughters! The verse says: So ask the disbelievers (O Muhammad): are daughters to be for your Lord, after their claim that the angels were God’s daughters, while sons are to be for them? Do you wish for Allah what you do not wish for yourselves? “That is to say, the best (as they think) are exclusively theirs?
The meanings of verse 37:150
Or did Allah create the angels females as you claim while they were witnesses to the act of Allah’s creation? Were they present thereof that they might then say such a thing?
The meanings of verse 37:151
Lo! It is indeed out of their [own] mendacity, their [own] lies, it is of their falsehood) it is due to their denial that they say,
The meanings of verse 37:152
God has begotten’, for they claimed the angels are Allah’s daughters. And verily they are liars, in what they say.
The meanings of verse 37:153
And again of their falsehood, Has Allah preferred daughters to sons?
The meanings of verse 37:154
What is wrong with you? How do you judge? It means that you consider having female an evil and shameful although you choose for Allah what you would not accept for yourselves,
The meanings of verse 37:155
Will you not then remember? Will you not then reflect? Will you not take heed from what you say? That Allah, glory be to Him, is exalted above having a child?
The meanings of verse 37:156
Or do you have a clear warrant, a Scripture stating that the angels are Allah’s daughters? Do you have a plain definitive proof that God has a child?
The meanings of verse 37:157
Allah said: then produce your scripture, and show Me that the angels are Allah’s daughters in it, if you are being truthful, about this statement of yours.
The meanings of verse 37:158
And the disbelievers have set up between Allah, exalted be He, and the angels a kinship, by saying that they are God’s daughters, while the angels certainly know that the disbelievers shall indeed be arraigned, into the Eternal Fire, to be chastised therein.
It is also said that this verse was revealed about the dualists who claimed that Satan is Allah’s partner in that Allah created the good things while Satan created the evil ones; However, the angels know well that the disbelievers who claim that will be brought before Allah and will be chastised in the Eternal Hell.
The meanings of verse 37:159
Glorified be Allah, He exonerates Himself from the lies they attribute unto Him. He is exalted, above what they attribute, to Him in the way of His having a child or a partner.
===============================
Verses 17:85 and 37:149-159 of the Noble Quran in one translation (YUSUFALI):
Verse17:85 (YUSUFALI Translation):
they ask thee concerning the spirit (of inspiration). say: “the spirit (cometh) by command of my lord: of knowledge it is only a little that is communicated to you, (o men!)”
————————————————————-
Verses 37:149-159 (YUSUFALI Translation):
Verse 37:149
Now ask them their opinion: is it that thy lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-
Verse 37:150
Or that we created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?
Verse 37:151
Is it not that they say, from their own invention,
Verse 37:152
“Allah has begotten children”? but they are liars!
Verse 37:153
Did he (then) choose daughters rather than sons?
Verse 37:154
What is the matter with you? how judge ye?
Verse 37:155
Will ye not then receive admonition?
Verse 37:156
Or have ye an authority manifest?
Verse 37:157
Then bring ye your book (of authority) if ye be truthful!
Verse 37:158
And they have invented a blood-relationship between him and the angels: but the angels know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his judgment-seat)!
Verse 37:159
Glory to Allah! (he is free) from the things they ascribe (to him)!

How to Say Goodbye – Finding the Right Eulogy Sample
on Sep 15 in UncategorizedFrequently finding the best words to fit the things that one wants to say is very tough. It frequently harder to have to say those words out loud in front of friends and family. This is the rationale why finding the right eulogy sample is crucial in making a crucial funeral speech.
it does not matter if this is for ones relative or ones better half, the right eulogy sample would make for the best template in making the last notable goodbye. So one needs to choose wisely. If the eulogy is designed for print, it is best to use the sort of eulogy sample that would include his achievements and commendations. This is to make sure that once made public, even strangers are ready to feel that they recognize the persons worth. They might even remember him by association. This way if the funeral information are included, they can go and pay their respects. Printed eulogy samples are less difficult to do. Frequently the data is all that is asked of a relative of the deceased. There would be some other person to make the eulogy for that person.
But for those funeral speeches, the eulogy samples are rather more complicated. They have to decide if the way to chat about the shared memories they had with that person. This works rather well in cases of close family members and mates. A eulogy sample that would include a life history is less emotional and can be opted. This would detach a person from actually feeling gigantic pain but a certain loss still.
Whatever eulogy sample one selects, it should depend on the respect that is due the departed. That, in the least, is their right.

Suggested Outline From A Eulogy Sample
on Sep 15 in UncategorizedBefore writing down an eulogy, it’s vital to first sketch out an outline. An outline will dictate the flow of the speech. It ensures that the piece is cohesive and has a good structure. It also helps in the writing process itself so that there are no important stuff like tales and special memories that may get left out.
To get a concept on what the flow of an eulogy is like, a eulogy sample can be referred to. The samples are specified on how one is related to the deceased. There are different nicely-written eulogies to choose from, with the acceptable words and tone used at the right instances.
Using any of the eulogy samples will help in writing down your own outline. An excellent start will be to define one’s relationship with the deceased. From there, the tone of the eulogy can be established. Next, one can write down the list of qualities the person is understood for that may be missed by acquaintances and family. Include noteworthy events where those qualities were voiced and exhibited. Finally, one may end by making a wish for the departed and the family who have been left behind. By following and sticking to an outline, one will avoid rambling on in the speech.

Hit the Mark Every Time – Organizing Your Talk
on Sep 14 in UncategorizedHave you ever found yourself in a position where after forty-five minutes of sitting and listening to a speaker, you walk away wondering what that person was trying to say? You immediately think to yourself “That was a waste of time!” Unfortunately, this situation occurs all too frequently. The reason for this is usually because of poor structure.
Every speech or presentation should be comprised of three parts; an introduction, body and conclusion. While each part is necessary, the introduction might be viewed as the most important part of your speech. That’s because if you don’t get the audience’s attention within the first thirty seconds, you have lost them. From that point on, it’s an uphill battle to regain their attention. One excellent way to get their attention is to open with a short story, especially a personal story. Bear in mind however, it must be relevant to your topic. It must make a point. A story which doesn’t support your point simply confuses the audience. Another excellent way to open your talk is with a relevant quote. Quotes are useful because they generally get right to the point in very few words. After you have the audience’s attention, you can then move on to the body of your talk.
The body is the ‘meat’ of your talk. This is where you present your key points or ideas. A good rule of thumb here is to cover three to five main points, depending on time restrictions. Most listeners will not remember any more than that. Once you have chosen your main points, the next step is to elaborate on each key point through the use of statistics, facts or illustrative stories. After each of your main points has been addressed and clearly illustrated, it is time to move to your closing.
Generally speaking audiences remember best, what they hear last. So for that reason, you want to have a memorable closing. Simply summarizing your key points is one way to close. Another way is to tie your closing to your beginning. This can be done by reusing a quote that you opened with in your closing, and is very effective.
By following this three step process, you’ll ensure people aren’t walking away from your next presentation wondering “What did that person say?” You will definitely hit the mark!

Introducing a Speaker
on Sep 14 in UncategorizedWhether it’s an upcoming wedding ceremony, a business meeting or an awards banquet, sooner or later it’s bound to happen to you. Someone approaches you and asks if you will introduce a speaker – and all of a sudden you don’t feel so well.
Although this situation is not something you should be fearful of, it should not be taken lightly. A bad introduction can ruin a potentially great speech. But a good introduction can really set the stage and raise the enthusiasm of both the audience and the speaker. The key to a successful introduction is in the preparation. It should be organized well in advance and should not be a last minute thought.
The main objectives of an introduction are essentially twofold. The primary objective is to highlight the speaker. As the introducer, your role is to give the listeners an overview of the speaker they’re about to hear. This does not mean that you read off every accomplishment the speaker has ever achieved. What you’re aiming for, are significant facts and experiences that relate to the talk being delivered. This helps establish the speaker’s credibility. It also helps the audience understand why this speaker is addressing the given topic or subject.
The second objective of the introduction is to introduce the audience to the speaker’s topic or subject. It may also help to set the appropriate mood. The key is to give the listeners a clue as to what’s in store for them, without divulging too much information. And if your introduction can successfully deliver on these two objectives, the speaker will be well on their way to a successful talk – and they haven’t even taken the stage yet.
When the time comes to actually take the stage and introduce the speaker, here are some final things to consider. Be brief and to the point. There’s nothing worse than an introduction, which lasts longer than the speech itself. As well, don’t try to upstage the speaker. At this moment in time you are not the focal point, the speaker is. And finally, mention the speaker’s name at the very end of the introduction. Otherwise, it will not be heard because of the applause.
Oh and by the way, the applause you hear is not only for the speaker, but for you as well, for a wonderful introduction!
