Of course, you have got to state facts that may be relevant to the topic of your speech.

Humorous anecdote or a hilarious joke

Tell me, who doesn’t like a good laugh? Humor is a powerful tool in public speaking. If you are able to make people laugh from the very start, success for your speech is in the bag.

Humor will create a relaxed atmosphere and relaxed audiences are better listeners. Once your humor is established, the audience will grab to your every word expecting another amusing remark.

Rhetorical question

Rhetorical questions are thought provoking and they are great openers for any topics. They make your audience want to hear the answers to these questions.

Bring a prop

Imagine bringing a peculiar object. Slam it on a table and ask the audience what it is. Make sure it is relevant to your speech topic.

A quotation

This is one of the most common but effective methods nonetheless. Quotations should be inspiring, stimulating, or provocative. They are powerful introduction tools that can bring focus to your speech topic.

Addressing to public, group of persons, meetings on a special subject is called Speech.

       Industrialists and businessmen are often invited to speak at meetings. Some meetings, like conferences or seminars, are small and the audience is made up of specialists. Other meetings are large, like the gathering on occasions like an anniversary or an inauguration and the audience is mixed. With increasing awareness of the value of Public Relations in business, most common companies encourage their executives to attend public functions and to appear before the public and to accept invitations to be the chief guest or a speaker at the meetings.

       Being able to speak well in an asset in any profession. The success of a speaker depends, to some extent, on personality and the voice; but anyone can be a good speaker with knowledge of the formal aspects of public speaking and by taking the trouble to prepare.

                       Guidelines for Preparing Speech

          Preparation is very important. Even persons who have natural skill at speaking need preparation. It has been said that three secrets of success making in making speech are: Preparation, Preparation and Preparation. The first one is finding out everything possible about the occasion, the organizers, the venue, the time available, the audience and the others speakers and one’s own position in relation to them. The second is deciding exactly what to say, writing down the full text including the opening address and the ending words, with careful attention to vocabulary, style, content suitable for the audience and the occasion. The third is practicing speaking it so that it is delivered in a natural manner when the occasion comes.

 

                       Composition of a Speech

 

          A speech like any other composition, has an introduction, a Body and a conclusion . These much used words are still useful for analysis. Each one of them has a definite function and particular methods.

 (a)   Introduction: During the time when the first two or three sentences are spoken, the audience “sizes up” the speaker, unconsciously judging his personally and adjusting to his voice and manner. To some extent, the speaker’s success at this initial stage depends n personality and voice, but he words also play their part. The functions of the introductory words are :-

(1)   To establish rapport, (2) to focus attention and arouse attention.

 (b)  Focusing Attention: Focusing Attention of the audience on a central point is necessary. A speech cannot be a series of loose, unrelated remarks; there is a central point, however small, in every speech. Attention is must b drawn to this point so that the audience has a line of thought to follow.

 (c)  The Body: The materials depend on the purpose of the speech. If the purpose is to encourage, it is necessary to elaborate on the value of work, to praise the achievements and express faith in the listener’s ability to do more. A speech meant to inform must be carefully planned according to the subdivisions o the subject.

(d)  Conclusion: The function of the closing paragraph is  to leave a clear message. If the speech has been informative, a short summary is the best conclusion.

 

    Attention- focusing sentences are useful at this stage as they are at the beginning. A few questions or a quotation can mark the conclusion.

Just because you’re talking . . . doesn’t mean I’m listening

I may look like I’m listening to you, but don’t count on it. I have a lot on my mind. Bills, kids, work, car problems are all running through my mind and unless I tell you, you simply won’t know. You’ll think I really am listening to you. Maybe we’re on the phone, maybe you’re in my office, and maybe you’re giving a presentation with me in the audience. I’m just on the other side of your words, but like it or not – your words are just not getting through.

Keep in mind that thinking is not necessarily the same as listening. So if the problem is that I’m thinking about something other than what you’re saying, to solve that problem you need to give me some compelling reasons to listen.

Here’s how. As you get ready to talk to me, consider that I’ll only give you my complete attention if you can answer these questions – and the more you answer, the longer I’ll listen:

1. Why should I listen to you in the first place?
2. Why should I keep listening?
3. What do you want me to remember?
4. What do you want me to do?

Of course you don’t need to use these exact words. But if you want me to listen, I need to know what’s in it for me. What will I get out of giving you my undivided attention? That’s it. Otherwise, I’m likely only going to listen to you selectively while I politely tune out your words and think about what’s really important to me. Too bad if it’s not what you have to say.

So think about what’s important to me before you start talking. If you do and I’m convinced of it, I’ll keep listening. It’s that simple.

Public Speaking Tips: Master Your Public Speaking Skills By Knowing Your Audience

One of the most critical public speaking tips is to understand your audience. Do your homework by asking the organizers of the events for a breakdown of the audience in terms of gender, age, interest and knowledge levels.

Even if you have spoken at similar events before, do not take a chance on being able to presume who your audience may be.

A recent Flash Developer conference held in Minneapolis made huge waves in the computer community in the USA, spilling over into the rest of the world. This particular conference is called Flashbelt. The name of the event provides a clue as to the type of person who might be attending, as it is held in the bible belt of the USA.  

Taking this into account, a speaker from England got it wrong when he didn’t follow one of the most important public speaking tips. He spent his hour discussing rather sexist and lewd content under the topic of graphic design, which did not go down well at all with the audience, sponsors of the event, other speakers and the broader public.

Under normal circumstances, this particular speaker is extremely popular at other Flash conferences and has been able to get away with his sexually explicit images and other bizarre stage activities. The audience has perceived this to be entertaining rather than below the belt.

Except for the audience in Minneapolis. Here there were people from the same field, same computer community, same interest group and discipline. However, the event is being held in a religious area and the normal audience members coming from the immediate area took objection. To the embarrassment of the event organizers, the objections were very intense.

This is a prime example of how important it is to ensure that you’re aware of this public speaking tip – knowing who your audience is. You may imagine that you are speaking to the same kind of people that you have spoken to before.

In this instance, one would imagine the event organizers should have sent out a warning that speakers should show some sensitivity towards their audience. As penalty for this blunder, this particular speaker is not on the lineup of the next big Flash conference in the UK.

Do not presume you know your audience. Make sure you find out as much as possible about your audience, their likes and dislikes, their beliefs and their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. It is well worth doing this kind of research.

Once you have established the profile of your audience in your mind, you will find it easier to prepare your content to be appropriate to these listeners. It is up to you as speaker to ensure that you do not offend or alienate your audience.

This does not mean that you should not challenge your audience to new thinking, if the situation requires it. What it does mean is that you present your material in a way that still makes people think without offending them. This is one of the public speaking tips that must be followed at all times.

When we hear people mention about public speaking, the next word is fear. Yes, fear of public speaking or glossophobia. It’s a fact that the most people have fear of public speaking or afraid of speaking in front of an audience.

People who have fear of public speaking experience all these typical symptoms: Sweaty palms, rapid heart beat, shaking all over, memory loss and some even to the extent of having breathing difficulty.  

Remember what Mark Twain’s quote: “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars”. Do you know some of the world’s renowned presenters or motivational speakers have openly admitted to have public speaking nerves or speech anxiety? Experienced and well-established speakers who give effective public speaking, do encounter some speech anxiety each time when they  are speaking in front of an audience. 

The first step to overcome the fear of public speaking is to accept the very fact that this fear is completely normal and and almost every other person do have the same fear. Yes, you are not alone.

Here are a few tips which are crucial to overcome your public speaking fear:

Know Your Stuff Well
Knowing your subject matter like the back of your hand is very important. Once you are well-versed in what you are going to talk about, your focus on the subject helps you to be less self-conscious. You will be busy sharing your talk and concentrating on explaining. Practice your speech or presentation and revise it until you can present it with ease.

Start Out Small Gain Experience
Take small baby steps. Initially, practise speaking in front of a small group. Starting from your own supportive friends, family, relatives and workmates. With each session, you will find out your strengths and weakesses. Experience builds confidence. This  is the key to effective public speaking. You will find your anxieties decrease after each speech you give. The more you practise it will increase your confidence. That’s what most standup comedians do in some unknown comedy clubs before they hit the big time.

Know Your Audience

Meet and greet your audience before your talk. Chit chat and exchange pleasantries with them. It helps a lot to both you and the audience. Later when you up there speaking, you will feel more relaxed as you have already meet some of them earlier. They are not total strangers to you anymore.

Get To Know the Venue
Familiarize yourself with the place in which you going to speak. Always arrive earlier and walk around the room  and the speaking area. Go to the lectern, speak into the microphone. Do all these, it helps you feel at home, so to  speak. 

Do Some Relaxing Exercise
After checking the room, do some simple light exercise to ease tension. Breathe in slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Open your mouth and eyes wide, then shut them tightly to relax your facial muscles.

Creative Visualization
 Picture yourself walk up confidently, greeted with loud rousing applauds. Now see youself speaking with poise and  full of enthusiasm.  Visualize yourself as a successful speaker before your audience. 

Focus On The Message 

Just concentrate on your message of your speech. Focus on sharing with them of what you have prepared and your nervous feelings will fade into the background. 

Never Say Sorry , You’re Nervous
Always remember this advice. Never ever apologize for being nervous. Just be confident as I have mentioned above, and blast off your speech like a professional speaker. Don’t call for any unneccessary attention. No one out there is looking for a nervous speaker.

The Audience
Frankly, I am sure nobody wants to see boring or nervous speakers. They want speakers or presenters to sound interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. Why do they want you to fail?

How a ‘Free’ Seminar Generated Over $6000 in Sales…in 1 Hour

I have a system for generating sales before the seminar is even over with.  I used this technique in a seminar I had in Sydney and had a 66% sales rate and made over $6000 in sales.  It was so simple and easy and yet so powerful.  You can use this technique just as easily in your next seminar and have similar results.

First step is to buy an audio recorder.  They come anywhere from $39 to $300, but the median range for a decent one is about $100 to $120 dollars.  An audio recorder contains a USB port; this is where the magic lies.

You see, whatever you record on your audio recorder can be uploaded to your computer.  There, you can edit the material you’ve recorded and turn it into a marketable product.

You can record interviews with experts on your subject, record yourself, or record testimonials from clients and customers and turn them into audio files.  At that point you can send them to your list, use them as a product on your website, or upgrade your website to contain audio to go with the sales page.  And audio testimonials are powerful when selling a product.  Your visitors will hear the excitement and enthusiasm of the person giving the testimonial.

Now to show you how I used this technique to generate sales.

I was speaking to an audience of about 150 people.  My presentation was jam-packed with information and people were writing furiously.  About 2/3 of the way through, I asked the audience if they thought they would remember what they’d just heard.  Only 2 or 3 people raised their hands.  At that point I let them know that I was recording the seminar and at the end of it they would be able to get the entire seminar, unedited and with all the questions, all the comments from the evening.  The charge of the CD was $69.  At the end of the evening, 100 people bought the CD of what they’d just heard.  That translates into $6900.

How To Platform Sell and How To Create A Killer Offer

So the time has come for you to use your existing knowledge, skills and expertise and create a product or system using those skills, and then to sell that from the stage to generate massive passive profits? Am I in the ball park here?

The first step is realize that the first product won’t be perfect, if you crave perfection and tend to put things off until last minute because you didn’t possess and HD video camera, or a high quality Voice recorder, or even your writer or graphic artist is on holiday don’t worry about it! Find someone else to complete the job and then revise it later on.

Many of my existing products I currently sell have been revised and updated more that four (4) times. So that can go to say that the first product I created wasn’t up to par but it was GOOD ENOUGH. Write that down because that’s all that counts. Is it GOOD ENOUGH to sell and market, if it is then do it .. if you get a flood of returns due to quality issues then that’s your market feedback that you need to revise it.

Businesses in a box tend to sell for three (3) times for than informational products, solely because there isn’t much work for the customer, let’s face it when the audience buy your products they’re not really buying a box of books they’re buying a result, they want the results of the information product whether it’s more money, customers etc .. they don’t want to do more work, and this makes businesses in boxes more preferable. However to create this type of product is a lot of work in most cases, you’ll need a proven system already in place and then document the system.

Learn To Use Voice Inflection on Stage To Be A Better Speaker

To be a speaker that generates money from the stage (platform speaking) you will need a commanding voice that varies up and down, deep and soft, fast and slow … If you fail to vary your voice you will lose your audience quick-smart. This is not theory this is a fact. Monotone speakers can’t sustain audiences and no matter the benefit of their product or service to the consumer the audience will not be engaged and sales will suffer. The speaker suffers.

How do I use proper voice inflection then?

The irony is most speakers who aim to have a  professional and business like image, tend to sound the most monotone. They believe to be taken seriously they need to have this professional image and sound monotone … however the key to holding attention with your audience (prospects) is to speak with passion. Passion ignites enthusiasm.

If YOU are not PASSIONATE about your product or service don’t sell it .. the audience will see through you and your pitch.

When you speak with children what’s your normal tone? Is it businesslike and professional? or does it vary? with proper intonation and modulation, going up and down, deep and soft? It would be the latter … and this is how you SHOULD be speaking to your audience. Speak with animation and be lively and avoid trying to be too businesslike and monotone … drop that boring image as it wont help you.

Most important step is to be natural. If you feel really strong about something it comes through naturally, especially in the sales process. When you’re angry you don’t need to fake an angry tone it just comes out naturally, when you’re happy same goes … Be passionate about your topic and be there to truley help the audience and the passion and enthusiasm will shine through naturally. Obama is a good example of great voice inflection and enthusiasm,

I dont want to get caught up too much on the “technology side” of things but using a voice recorder can help. Record your voice for a 3 minutes as you speak and play back to hear whether you’re speaking with enthusiasm or passion.
